2016 was a record year for materials manufacturer Covestro. Driven by demand for innovative materials, the Group’s core volumes increased by 7.5%. With greater capacity utilization across its plants, adjusted EBITDA surged by 22.7% above the 2015 figure to EUR 2.0 billion. Net income more than doubled from EUR 343 million to EUR 795 million. On this basis, Covestro plans to pay its shareholders a dividend of EUR 1.35 per share.

Lighting and electronics specialist HELLA has worked with Covestro, one of the world's largest polymer manufacturers, to develop an industry-first holographic rear-lighting system with 3D effects for passenger vehicles.

Materials manufacturer Covestro continued its successful half-year trend in the third quarter of 2016 with high Free Operating Cash Flow and strong earnings. Adjusted EBITDA rose significantly by 21.9% year-on-year to EUR 574 million, mainly driven by higher volumes combined with higher margins. The Group’s core volumes (in kilotons) were up by 9.1% on the prior-year period.

Together with Covestro, one of the largest polymer manufacturer in the world, lighting and electronics specialist HELLA has developed a new design for vehicle signal lighting using holographic technology. Since 2012, both companies have been pooling their expertise in the areas of plastics technology, as well as design and lighting technology, in order to use signal lighting as a style element. For this reason, the companies have been developing innovative designs for the front and rear lighting of electric cars in collaboration since 2015. The result is holographic lighting with 3D effects, as well as a seamless and aerodynamic design. A show car demonstrating this will be presented in Düsseldorf from October 19 to 26, 2016, as part of Covestro’s presence at the K Trade Fair, the leading trade fair for the plastics and rubber industry (Hall 6, Stand A75).

To satisfy growing demand for polycarbonate in Asia, Covestro is doubling production capacities for the high-tech plastic from 200,000 to 400,000 metric tons per year at its site in Shanghai, China. Two new world-scale production lines for polycarbonate resins were inaugurated there on Wednesday, with state-of-the-art technologies and energy saving processes. This thrusts Covestro into becoming the world’s largest producer of such resins.
