A one year program to evaluate the use of LED outdoor street lights has been launched by the town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Duke Energy Carolinas.

Torraca, a small village of 1,200 inhabitants in Italy, is the first place in the world to be totally illuminated by LEDs with some 700 streetlights (each containing 54 LEDs) now lining its arteries. And this new source of light has begun to light up the night all around the world from Beijing's Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium to the Raleigh Convention Center's Shimmer Wall in North Carolina.

Lights are shining the University at Buffalo's North Campus because the university has replaced some conventional lamps with LEDs. Five new LED street lights were installed on the service road leading to the Baker Chilled Water Plant on the North Campus, while a total of four new LED interior lights were installed in corridors in the UB Center for the Arts and 20 LED lamps were installed in the main lobby of Alumni Arena, home of the UB Athletics Department.

It’s reported that Pittsburgh is considering the replacement of its 40,000 street lights with LED fixtures. It is estimated that it could save up to upwards of $1.4 million a year in energy and maintenance costs, and “look nicer.”

Taiwan Opto Tech has unveiled its new Smart Street Lights using Nichia LEDs. The company says the new LED street lights have four main functions which include a modulized design, a unique cooling technology, a new optical design, and an excellent power module. The fixture is streamlined and ultra-thin, with a depth of only 80mm and will be expected to meet the global market demand. The company currently plans to mass-produce 55W and 105W street lights that can be used with either solar or AC power.

The Bitan drawbridge of Taipei, Taiwan has now become a brand new “pearl & rainbow drawbridge,” showcasing many of the latest lighting technologies from Everlight Electronics Co. Ltd. Because Everlight provided LED components, lighting designs, and SL-Dolphin Street Lights to Bitan Scenic for reconstructing the Bitan Drawbridge and lighting up the west river bank of Bitan Scenic Area.

Chinese LED lighting maker Everlite LED Lighting Co., Ltd, has launched its full range high power LED street lights including 30w, 42w, 60w, 84w, and 120w in terms of led power. All of them can be made into AC universal input voltage 85~265V, and also low voltage 12V/24Vdc for applying to solar lighting systems.

Recently, Philips Lumileds announced that Lansing Board of Water and Light (LBWL), a municipally owned utility in Lansing, Michigan, expanded its trial of LUXEON-based street lamps with the addition of six new fixtures illuminated by neutral white LUXEON Rebel LEDs.

It’s reported that Brooklyn Park and Xcel Energy Co. started an energy saving experiment this week by installing LED bulbs in nine streetlights.

Sharp Corporation will introduce into the Japanese market two models of solar-powered LED street lights that combine Sharp’s proprietary solar (photovoltaic) modules and high-intensity, long-life white LEDs (light emitting diodes). The LN-LW3A1 Solar-Powered LED Street Light delivers brightness at the industry’s highest level (instrument-measured luminous flux: 1,800 lumens) rivaling the light output from a regular 32-W fluorescent security light (which uses six compact fluorescent tubes) that is becoming the dominant product for this application.
