Keeping Cars in Sight with Laser and IR LED Technology

More than ten years ago, Osram Opto Semiconductors supplied infrared laser diodes for the first laser sensors in cars. As one of the first suppliers of powerful infrared LEDs (IREDs), Osram has also accompanied the development of camera systems with additional infrared illumination since their inception. Up to now, these optical sensors have been connected to one assistance system each, but from now on they will play an important role in automated driving in combination with other technologies. With the help of the optical sensors, the self-driving car captures its surroundings, and makes decisions using the data it has gathered.

Audi A8 with LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors

In the new version of the Audi A8, light emitting diodes from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors are responsible for the dipped and full beams as well as for other specific lighting functions. Apart from their efficiency, an excellent argument for LEDs is their long life, which exceeds that of the vehicle. Plus, with light similar to daylight they improve motorists’ safety.

LED —— The Fourth Generation of Automotive Light Source

The structure of modern automobile lamps is becoming more and more complicated, at the same time the function is being improved gradually. The development of automobile lamps has experienced four stages. The first generation of automotive light source is fuels (candles, coal oil or acetylene). These fuels burn to emit lights. Fuels can only satisfy the requirement of early stage automobile lamps due to its low luminous efficiency, weak light intensity, unstable performance, complex operation and etc. shortcomings.
