When Boston University went in search of a lighting upgrade for its Track and Tennis Center, it set its sights high—literally. Seeking to improve light levels and reduce energy as part of its ongoing energy-efficiency initiatives, the University’s Building Automation Services team knew they needed a high bay LED lighting solution.

Looking at the current lighting market, smart lighting has already become a new product that manufacturers such as Philips are rushing to release. It was a hot topic not only at the Light+Building exhibition in Germany, but also in the recent Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition earlier this month. The smart lighting market is still in its early stages of development, but manufacturers are eager to expand. The market anticipates to enter into a rapid growth period within one to two years. 

Stouch Lighting, a lighting distributor specializing in LED and energy efficient lighting, announces the completion of an exterior LED lighting retrofit project for Kaiserman Company at their Kevon Office Center located in Pennsauken, New Jersey, projected to save the company over $3,600 per year in lighting energy costs.

HiLumz USA LLC (formerly Lumax Systems LLC), a U.S. manufacturer of LED Lighting and Retrofit Solutions announced today that production of its 2nd Generation Diamonz® Retrofit Kits has begun in the United States. Designed to retrofit commercial and industrial 100 Watt to 1,000 Watt light fixtures, HiLumz customers keep their existing fixtures and simply replace the bulb and ballast with an LED solution. Primary applications for the 40 Watt to 360 Watt LED retrofit kits include lighting of parking lots, street lights, warehouse high bay fixtures, wall packs, garage and gas station canopy lights and commercial flood lights. Virtually 95% of the high intensity light fixtures in use today are candidates for the Diamonz LED retrofit.

This majestic, historic building now houses Restoration Hardware’s Flagship Store. After sitting empty for years, façades and roofs were restored and a vibrant, new use of the building’s interior was realized. Now a retail establishment, treatment as a monument, true color and daytime concealment were critical requirements. All façade lighting fixtures are completely concealed, evoking the desired “light from nowhere” look. Though 95 percent of this lighting is LED, multiple high-CRI source types are employed to accommodate the building and owner’s varied finishes, colors and proportions.

Artificial lighting is threatening the sea turtle population. After emerging from their shells in the wee hours of the morning, sea turtle hatchlings instinctively find their way to the sea by the light reflected on the ocean. Modern society is now posing a threat to their survival as the brightest light is no longer coming from the ocean, but from hotels and shops along the ocean front.

 Royal Philips announced the signing of its 400th licensee - Dotlux GmbH - to its LED Luminaires and Retrofit Bulbs Licensing Program, a growth of 100 licensees since May last year. Philips is committed to fostering LED industry growth and creating a level playing field by giving companies access to its wide portfolio of patented LED system technologies and solutions. By making available more than 210 inventions (comprising over 1200 granted patents), Philips aims to open up new business opportunities and possibilities for companies globally.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced awards of $4.3 million for 17 projects dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of transportation in New York State. These projects are in line with the governor’s energy vision to increase support for new and innovative clean energy technologies that help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce pollution and promote a cleaner and healthier environment while supporting the growth of the economy.

The USS Missouri has signed an agreement with Axis LED Lighting to retrofit the museum battleship with state of the art LED lighting and has retained the consultant firm Allana Buick & Bers to assist them in the overall energy retrofit. LED Lighting will greatly reduce the energy needed to light the historic site. Axis LEDs reduce energy consumption by up to 70%, last three times longer than conventional lighting and generate virtually no heat when compared to conventional lighting. 

Acuity Brands, Inc.  introduces the RV Series retrofit commercial LED downlight from Lithonia Lighting®. The unique fixture design allows the RV Series LED downlights to be installed into the existing mounting pans, requiring approximately five minutes or less to install each fixture.

CRS Electronics has refitted the Mississauga office of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. (GSK), one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical, vaccine and healthcare companies, with light-emitting diodes (LED). LED lights use significantly less energy than incandescent, halogen or fluorescent tube lighting. They also provide increased brightness and require less maintenance. The average LED lighting fixture will pay for itself within 2 years of being installed.

Two French institutions Francais du Design and Equip’Hotel Paris honored Philips MASTER LED, a solid-state light bulb identical in form factor to a conventional light bulb for its innovative design and sustainability. Philips notes its MASTER LED is the first LUXEON Rebel based replacement bulb that delivers on the promise of high efficiency, uncompromised quality light, and long-life, in a package that makes it simple for people to use and feel good about using.

A petition filed recently with the Montana Public Service Commission (PSC) seeks to require LEDs be used in all new street and area lights to save money and energy. It’s said to the requirement would save NorthWestern Energy customers between $800,000 and $2.5 million a year.

Energy Focus Inc., a maker of LED lighting based in Solon, Ohio USA, announced that it has installed LED lighting to retrofit the high-bay lighting in a hanger deck on board an Arleigh Burke class Destroyer.
