Osram has agreed to acquire U.S.-based LED Engin Inc. in San Jose, California. The company has approximately 30 employees and annual sales of around USD 10 million. LED Engin specializes in ultra-bright, ultra-compact solid state lighting solutions for variety of specialty markets including entertainment lighting, ultraviolet, horticulture, tunable white and medical lighting applications. Its products mainly incorporate LED chips from Osram Opto Semiconductors.

Micro LED has become an obvious technology trend that even Samsung has started to eagerly tap into. According to international OLED publication OLED-info, Samsung is rumored to acquire Taiwan-based Micro LED manufacturer PlayNitride for up to US$150 million. Samsung would use the next generation display technology for VR applications and TVs in the future, the report said.

According to Reuters, German lighting giant Osram is considering new acquisitions worth up to 500 million euros (US$ 530 million), its CFO told German-based newspaper Boersen-Zeitung on Saturday (April 15). However, no specific plans have been made so far.

Intel on March 13 announced that the company will purchase Mobileye, a global provider of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). Effective Oct. 4, 2016, Osram, a leading global lighting and technology company, has successfully completed the acquisition of Novità Technologies, a U.S. manufacturer of automotive LED modules which are used primarily in tail lights, fog lights and daytime running lights. With this move, Osram will further expand its position in the U.S. automotive LED market. “The successful closing of this transaction is a further step in our strategy to strengthen our leading position in automotive lighting and to expand our LED automotive portfolio for project business,” said Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of the Specialty Lighting business unit. 

Further details of Ledman’s acquisition of a Chinese LED luminaire company has finally been confirmed today.

Chinese LED manufacturer Ledman announced it is planning to acquire a new LED luminaire company as of July 8, 2015.

Listed Taiwanese LED manufacturer FOREPI and Epistar completed official integration on Dec. 30, 2014, according to an UDN report. FOREPI has become a subsidiary under Epistar, and after an interim shareholder meeting in September, FOREPI will complete integration during 1Q15. After being absorbed by Epistar, FOREPI is expected to profit in 2015.

Apple and GT Advanced Technology (GTAT) settlement was unaffected by the publication of documents previously considered confidential, according to a Bloomberg report.

Since GT Advanced Technology (GTAT) abruptly filed for bankruptcy protection this Monday, many industry insiders have speculated how this will impact Apple. While the LED industry was still reeling from news of Epistar’s acquisition of FOREPI, Philips dropped another bomb shell, announcing the merger of its LED component and automotive lighting assets on June 30, 2014. 

Epistar has finally decided to acquire FOREPI, and will be announcing the details of the deal later today, according to several Taiwanese media reports.

BTI is being acquired from its management for a total consideration of DKK 26m (£3.0m), DKK 18m (£2.1m) of which is payable in cash with the remainder in Dialight shares.
