In fact, with the latest integration of LED technology, lighting has become a significant feature of cars with potential value rather than a basic function of vehicles, and OLEDs have the real potential to differentiate themselves from LEDs and can provide new added values. The BMW M4 GTS, introduced in 2016, is the first commercial vehicle to incorporate OLED technology in taillights.

NEC Lighting Ltd has developed a white OLED device whose luminous efficiency is 156lm/W in its booth at Lighting Fair 2013 from March 3 to 8, 2013, in Tokyo. The device was developed in collaboration with a research group led by Junji Kido, professor at Yamagata University. Back in May 2011 Philips announced that they are investing €40 million in a new OLED lighting production line in Aachen. Philips inaugurated the new line - which has been producing OLEDs since Q3 2012 in fact (but it's only official now). Available in series, the new lighting module from the OLEDmodule LUREON REP product range for the first time achieves a luminous flux of more than 100 lumens, at dimensions of 99 x 99 mm². Recently, Philips has come out a new roadmap for their OLED lighting products which are divide into two families - one for decorative lighting and one for performance lighting. According to the company, the decorative panels are normally reflective in the off state, and it will offer transparent ones as soon as next year.
