Urbanova, a smart city living lab in Spokane, Washington’s University District, has reached a key milestone with its Smart and Connected Streetlights Pilot, installing sensors on and collecting data from 10 streetlights across the district. Silver Spring Networks, Inc. today announced its first international utility-led, country-wide smart street light control program with Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS). JPS is an integrated electric utility company and the sole distributor of electricity in Jamaica serving over 600,000 customers. JPS will extend its existing Silver Spring IPv6 platform to connect up to 110,000 smart LED street lights in population centers around the island including Kingston, Spanish Town, Negril, and Falmouth. Silver Spring’s Streetlight.Vision Central Management System (CMS) will also be deployed for JPS through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model to control and manage the networked street lights.

Internet of Things pioneer Echelon Corporation is currently conducting what is believed to be the first successful deployment of so-called “white tunable” connected streetlighting with the municipal leaders of White Bear Lake, a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota and design firm Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. The new Lumewave by Echelon solution can dynamically regulate the amount of potentially unhealthy blue light emitted from outdoor lighting. With this ground-breaking innovation, city managers can adjust streetlight color from soothing warm yellow to bright blue-white based on activity levels, time of day, weather and events. Dimming levels can also be remotely adjusted, making the system ideal to aid visibility for first responders, security professionals and more.

Peter Arellano, the city's director of public works,said that Beaverton plans to improve street lighting this fiscal year, with four stretches of street expected to install new lights by June 30. The public works department will also ask the City Council to make LED lights the standard for street lights city-wide. Arellano told the city's budget committee May 30.
