EPISTAR Corporation, a leading innovator and manufacturer of LED solid-state lighting technologies, filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Lowe’s Companies, Inc. and Lowe’s Home Centers, LLC (collectively “Lowe’s”) in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas Waco Division on May 22, 2020. Taiwan-based LED chip maker EPISTAR announced that it has received a remarkable ruling on LED filament bulbs in the patent litigation against Lowe’s. On February 11, 2020, the United States District Court for the Central District of California granted summary judgment of infringement against Lowe’s Home Center (Lowe’s).

Epistar announced that it has achieved a victory in the petitions filed by Lowe’s Home Center with the United States Patent and Trademark Office which challenged the validity of five Epistar patents related to Epistar’s innovative LED filament bulb technology. The five patents are U.S. Patent No. 6,346,771, 7,560,738, 8,492,780, 8,587,020, and 8,791,467.

Nichia Corporation (“Nichia”) and Lowe’s Home Centers, LLC, Lowe’s Companies, Inc. and L G Sourcing, Inc. have reached a settlement in the cases titled Nichia Corporation v. Lowe’s Companies, Inc. et al., Case No. 2:16-cv-00613-JRG (filed in the Eastern Districts of Texas); Nichia Corporation v. Lowe’s Companies, Inc. et al., Case No. 5:16-cv-00142-MOC-DSC (filed in the Western District of North Carolina); and Nichia Corporation v. Lowe’s Home Centers, LLC et al., Case No. 2:16-cv-01455-JRG (filed in the Eastern Districts of Texas), mutually agreeing to dismissal of the lawsuits. While the terms of the agreement are confidential, both parties are pleased with the result. Nichia’s suits against VIZIO(1)(2)(3) and Feit(4)(5) in the Central District of California remain ongoing.
