Light for Demanding Triemli Hospital Environment

Patients, doctors, nurses and hospital administrators all have specific expectations of the lighting in wards. Engineers and designers at Prolux Licht took a look at the various requirements of these different user groups and produced a solution that satisfies them all, the Sanapro luminaire. LED technology from Tridonic forms the heart of this modular lighting solution for the Triemli hospital, Zürich. In conjunction with high-performance optical components, the LED modules enable different lighting functions to be integrated in a slim and attractive design.

A Minergie luminaire for the Triemli hospital

For some time now, the Triemli hospital in Zürich has been engaged in a long-term plan, extending beyond 2020, to modernise its infrastructure. The plan includes renovation work, changes of use and a number of new buildings, such as the recently completed ward block designed by architects Aeschlimann Hasler Partner. The architects, together with the lighting designers from Reflexion AG, decided that they would need a special luminaire to achieve their concept for optimum illumination of the wards. They drew up ambitious specifications for efficiency, functionality and design. Luminaire developers at Prolux Licht AG met these requirements with their Sanapro profile luminaire. As a Minergie luminaire, it offers impressive energy efficiency together with various lighting functions that meet all the needs of patients, doctors and nursing staff.

Ten LED modules, four lighting functions

The luminaires have a modular structure, each accommodating lighting units for gentle room light, glare-free and shadow-free reading light and bright light from the head to the foot of the bed for medical examinations. Linear TALEXXengine LLE LED modules from Tridonic are used as the light sources for all three types of light. Each luminaire is equipped with ten modules in two different versions. There is also a single LED that functions as a night light. With all the lighting functions activated at full luminous flux, the luminaire has a power draw of 126 W and provides a total luminous flux of 10,387 lumen.

Different modes of the Tridonic lights installed can also light up the patient room with direct LED lighting such as pictured above.

 A building block approach

Tridonic offers its LED components as a system solution. This means that suitable LED Drivers with interfaces for various lighting control protocols are available for the LED modules with their different shapes, dimensions, luminous fluxes and light colors. Based on the building block principle, luminaire manufacturers can put together the right combination of LED modules and drivers for their needs. "In view of the modular design of our luminaire, the system concept behind the TALEXX product family has proved to be a special benefit", explained Alain Lipp, Director of Technology and Development at Prolux Licht AG. "We have found not only suitable LED engines in different lengths and luminous fluxes but also compatible drivers with an integrated DALI interface."

The ten LED modules in each Sanapro luminaire are operated on two LED Driver of type TALEXXdriver LCAI one4all integrated in the housing. As a result, all four lighting functions can be switched separately via DALI and also dimmed, with the exception of the night light. A Tridonic DALI control module is used to connect the night light to the DALI controller.

 Scope for variation and expansion

When the new ward block at Triemli hospital is in full operation in 2015, 600 Sanapro luminaires will be used to illuminate the patient rooms. This Zürich hospital will certainly not be the only place where powerful and durable LED lighting will be providing impressive results from a compact and easy-to-clean housing. What began as a special-purpose luminaire is now being offered by Prolux in many different versions to meet different customer requirements. Different sizes can be produced and also different combinations of the individual lighting functions. Daylight-dependent control concepts and the integration of dynamic lighting scenarios are also possible options for the future.
