Another day, another ultra-slim LCD TV. Right now it's AUO's turn to release a super-skinny panel, and their 42-inch TFT-LCD measures in at just 9.98mm deep. It also weighs significantly less than rivals - 44-percent less, according to AUO - and uses LED backlighting to reduce power consumption and make construction more straightforward.
Despite the narrow build, brightness is still 450 nits and apparently very uniform across the image. There's no suggestion of a product release as yet, nor how the panels might be priced.
AUO have also developed a 42-inch panel with a contrast ratio in excess of 200,000:1. They've managed it by using 16×8 blocks of LED backlights, each of which can be individually controlled and dimmed. Both of the displays will be on show at the SID (Society for Information Display) 2008, from May 20 through 22 in Los Angeles, California.
