Of all LED TV backlight modules currently on the market, there are two main types of configuration for backlight source: direct-type and edge-type configuration. As for backlight sources, 4 variations can be formed by different combinations of RBG LED and white LED; if the slim design, high- and low-power LED, as well as other types of LED backlights are taken into consideration, it may generate a wide variety of combinations.
There are two mainstream LED TV backlight modules available to TV brand vendors –
1. Edge-type white-LED backlight, which received little attention in development in the past, has become the most invested type in the industry; its advantages include its slim nature and simpler backlight module structure.
2. Direct-type LED backlight – its advantages include regional control technology to enhance image contrast ratio and lower power consumption. Currently, manufacturers have achieved high dynamic contrast Ratio, boasting an advantage in image definition unmatched by edge-type structures.
The series of edge-type LED TV by Samsung Electronics always focused on the "ultra-thin" design concept and the minimum cost difference between these slim models and CCFL-based LCD TV is $180. Samsung's edge-type LED TV achieves a 29.9mm profile through minimizing the light guide plate thickness to less than 2mm, and reducing single LED width from the original 4.6mm to 3mm; in addition, Samsung's light weight edge-type LED TV is accomplished by cutting down the number of LED backlights from 600 to less than 400 units.
