In regard to Veeco’s Taiwan Technology Center for the LED industry, Justin K. Wang, the VP/General Manager of Veeco Instrument Inc, and Dr. Ming Jiunn Jou, the President of Epistar Corporation, indicated that the future of LED makers comprises both risks and opportunities. Therefore, they hoped that the Taiwanese government can establish specific standards and criteria for LED lighting products, in the hope of raising awareness of LED products in consumers. Furthermore, if the government is willing to enact subsidy policies for the LED industry, the profits they bring will largely exceed the investment they require. That being said, the Taiwanese government should more actively support the energy-saving and green energy industries, otherwise the Taiwanese LED industry may be surpassed by South Korea in 2011 and decline to the third place in the total capacity of LED.
According to LEDinside’s observation on the LED market development in 2011, despite the booming growth of LED lighting market, the lack of specific standards has resulted in uneven qualities of products in the market. Without the criteria to certify the qualities of products, the Gresham's Law is expected to dominate the market before the trust established with western channel clients and general customers.
Veeco has installed MaxBright System at TTC and will install K465i MOCVD equipment in the future, which shows that Veeco greatly values the prospects of the Taiwanese LED industry.
In light of that, the green energy industry particularly depends on the support from the governments, the Chinese and South Korean governments have launched subsidy policies with respect to the up and midstream of the LED industry. Affected by the earthquake and electricity rationing, the Japanese government has been advocating the use of energy-saving products, which has triggered a fast-increasing LED adoption in industrial lighting. Hence, manufacturers that successfully make their ways into the supply chain of the Japanese lighting market are able to deliver certain revenue with less dramatic decline.
Besides, the South Korean government launched the "LED Lighting 2060 Planning (long-term road map for universal LED)", dedicatedly supporting the domestic LED manufacturers. It is believed that South Korean LED makers will become major opponents in the global LED market. If the Taiwanese government does not start drawing up policies to propel the development of LED industry, an arduous future for the Taiwanese LED makers is expected.
