Hot Picks of the Week Jan. 18-22

Highlights this week:

  • This has been a turbulent week for the LED industry. Philips announced just a few hours ago that it has terminated the sales of Lumileds to Go Scale Capital, the company was forced to abort the US $3.3 billion business transaction, due to opposition raised by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The company probably has a potential buyer lined up already.
  • Another European LED manufacturer Osram has renamed its lamp business LEDvance, and aims to complete carve out of its LED lamp and classical ballast business by April this year.
  • U.S. manufacturer Cree has had a rather mixed week. The good news is the LED maker has seen its revenue rebound, as it completes its LED business restructure. The bad news is the IPO to be issued for its power business Wolfspeed has been delayed.
  • Two Asian LED manufacturers Epistar and Samsung have refuted rumors leaked on the market. Taiwanese LED company Epistar has denied any plans of acquiring or merging with another company, while Samsung has vehemently denied reports by Korean media ETimes claiming it has laid off employees from its LED business. Unity Opto, a Taiwanese LED OEM, has announced it will be developing smart lighting modules in the future with Sercomm.
