Osram launched many automotive lighting products this week, including automotive LEDs and OLED taillights. The company has also announced two major partnerships including licensing its LED epiwafer patents to a major Japanese company, and sealing a smart LED lighting deal with Tvilight.

Philips continued its aggressive smart lighting expansions, cementing a joint venture deal with large Chinese electronic manufacturer Xiaomi. Israeli researchers recently published vulnerabilities of the Dutch lighting giant’s Philips Hue bulbs, which both the researchers and Philips claims has been patched. It does reveal the weaknesses in using connected devices, and importance of upgrading security measures for smart lighting, especially citywide smart streetlights would be most at risk of these types of hacking activity.

Epistar has also been very active with its LED filament strategy this year, while Taiwan’s largest lighting company China Electric senior managers are under investigation for embezzling company funds. For more please see below:
