China Makes Breakthrough in High Power LED Technology

A research institute and manufacturer based in southern China province Fujian have made a significant breakthrough in making small high power LEDs that can be driven at 1,000W, reported China Daily.

The technology jointly developed by Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) and Fujian Zhongke Xinyuan Optoelectronics Technology involves transparent fluorescent ceramic material that focuses dens LED lights onto a small surface.

"With previous technologies, Chinese LED manufacturers were not able to produce high power LED," said Hong Moachun, academician at FJIRSM. According to Hong, when LEDs are driven to more than 200W, thermal energy released on the tiny surface would damage the lights. Hence, most LEDs could only be applied in general lighting applications.

The two organizations new LED claims to be able to operate under 1,000W, and is no bigger than a small coin. Ceramic material used to make the LEDs are capable of high thermal conductivity, and is highly temperature and corrosion resistant. It also has anti-thermal shock properties, which accelerates the thermal dissipation process for the small light source.

Technological barriers has limited Chinese companies products to general lighting applications, such as public lighting, traffic lights and other signal lights, with up to 80% of LED products produced in the country falling under this application category, said Ye Shanghui, deputy manager of Fujian Zhongke Xinyuan Optoelectronics Technology.

“Very few (LEDs made by Chinese companies) are used in high end products such as automobile lights and large screens,” he added. “China must break the (technology) barrier to achieve long-term growth in the industry.”
