Seeing High Demands in Mini LED, Epistar Increases Production Capacity

Despite that the world spreading coronavirus epidemic seems to lead to economic decline, LED chip maker Epistar still sees growing demands for Mini LED and has decided to increase capital expenditure to expand capacity for Mini LED chip production.

As one of the first Mini LED chip maker, Taiwan-based Epistar has been progressing its Mini LED development for years and began to collaborate with several clients to build Mini LED backlit notebooks, monitors and TVs. As the clients are ready to launch the new products, Epistar is expecting blooming demands for Mini LED chips in coming years.

In order to fulfill the rising demands, Epistar plans to transfer its currently blue LED capacity in Taiwan into Mini LED and automotive LED production. Thus, the company will increase its capital expenditure from the planned NT$ 5 billion (US$ 166.6 million) to NT$ 6 billion (US$ 200.05 million) for Mini LED production capacity.

Epistar said that most of the new Mini LED backlight products will be launched in 1H21 while some in 2H20. It is estimated that by the end of 2020, Mini LED production will take 20 to 30% of its blue LED capacity.
