Taiwanese panel manufacturer AUO held its investor conference yesterday and announced financial results of 2Q20. Driven by “Stay-at-home” economy, the company reported strong demand for display applications and expects the growth momentum to continue in the second half of the year.
For 2Q20, AUO posted consolidated revenues of NTD 63.50 billion (US$ 2.16 million), up by 18.3% QoQ. Gross margin came to 2.7%. In the second quarter of 2020, large-sized panel shipments totaled around 30.71 million units, hiked by 37.0% QoQ. Shipments of small-and-medium-sized panels in the same quarter were around 29.09 million units, down by 1.5% QoQ.
AUO also shipped a series of 65 to 85-inch 8K bezel-less QLED TV displays to Samsung, targeting the high-end home electronics market. The 8K TV products features ultra-high resolution that is 16 times higher than that of full HD. In addition, with quantum dot technology, the displays have color saturation reaching 90% of the Rec. 2020 color gamut.
The panel company’s 17.3-inch Mini LED backlight display has been adopted in gaming and professional notebooks as well. In the second half of the year, AUO will continue to supply its Mini LED based display products for premium applications. Meanwhile, the company is dedicating to cut the production cost of Mini LED products with the aim to make them more compatible to OLED displays.
