Lighting Japan 2014 was comprised of three specialized shows, including the LED/OLED Lighting Expo, making it the biggest ever. Running from Jan. 15-17, the show was held at Big Sight Tokyo. Global lighting heavy weights including Philips, Osram, GE, Panasonic, and Toshiba to name a few, all displayed their new products for the upcoming year. LED components were not the only focal point of the expo. Lighting application and high density integration (HDI) systems also draw a lot of attention from buyers and visitors. OLED application in lighting was another notable trend during the show.

Lighting Japan 2014: Still a Long Road Ahead for OLED Lighting
At Lighting Japan 2014 in Tokyo Big Sight, OLED industry insiders of have noted that there is still a long way to go before the technology can become mature enough to compete with LEDs.
From a designer’s perspective OLED is still a very attractive technology for making aesthetic luminaires. OLEDs have the features of being light, flexible, transparent, and low temperatures, pointed out Synqroa Vice President of Development Mitsuhiro Koyama and Vice President of Marketing Jun Shimada. Osram Discusses OLED Development at Lighting Japan 2014
At Lighting Japan 2014, it was clear that large manufacturers have been quickening their pace in introducing OLED into the lighting market. Large international manufacturer Osram spoke about developing OLED in the lighting market during the lighting expo. According to data from the company, OLED luminosity is expected to reach 125lm/W in 2018. The market will take off as luminosity increases and costs drop. Currently, aside from the increased willingness to incorporate OLED for general lighting purposes, large manufacturers have already started R&D for OLED in automotive tail lights. Read More

Lighting Japan 2014 Attracts more than 10,000 International Visitors and Buyers
Lighting Japan 2014, an event organized by Reed Exhibition’s Japan arm that ran from Jan. 15-17 at Tokyo Big Sight successfully concluded on the 17th. The three day lighting show has attracted over 9,000 international and domestic visitors during the first two days.
Statistics from the exhibitor showed the first two days of the exhibition attracted 4,328 and 4,904 visitors respectively, no details have been provided for the third day of the show yet. Our estimations based on the performance over the last two days is the actual number might be close to about 12,000 plus visitors. “The number of exhibitors has also increased from 353 in 2013 to 367 this year”, said Hajime Suzuki, Director and Group Vice President of Reed Exhibitions Japan. “While Design Tokyo exhibitors have doubled this year compared to 2013.” Read More
