Xicato Chooses UL For Economic LED Luminaire Testing Program

Xicato announced an exclusive LM-79 testing program that lowers testing costs by 50% per luminaire, and reduces testing turn-around time to just five business days, in comparison to industry norms of approximately four weeks. This unique program, in cooperation with UL is open now to all manufacturers whose luminaires have passed Xicato's thermal validation, a complimentary program offered by Xicato to all its customers.

"Extending our 'whole-product' approach to include LM-79 testing is a great way to help our customers speed their business cycle and lower costs," said John Yriberri, VP of Worldwide Application Support for Xicato. "Our customers in the U.S. and around the world are increasingly pursuing LM-79 testing as an important standard and proof of performance."

Established by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), the LM-79 testing methodology specifies measuring the absolute electrical and photometric performance of a complete solid-state lighting luminaire rather than individual parts of the system, and is increasingly a requirement for regional and national programs. Test results include total flux (light output), electrical power, efficacy, chromaticity, and intensity distribution, all of which are required for the LED Lighting Facts label.

"UL is excited to bring this efficient, LM-79 testing program to market with Xicato," said David Edwards, Engineering Leader, UL. "We are prepared to manage the testing of LED Luminaires featuring Xicato modules at our global UL photometric testing facilities which will help to increase confidence in an important global growth market." UL is a premier global independent safety science company that has championed progress in the lighting industry for over a century providing expertise, knowledge, research and testing to further standards development activities and meet ever-evolving safety needs.

The new LM-79 testing program supports Xicato's goal to make LED lighting as foolproof and future-proof as possible. The company's whole-product approach, thermal validation program and this new LM-79 program contribute to end-user confidence in solutions that provide high quality light with demonstrated color, consistency and light output performance. For Xicato's OEMs, it provides a path to lower costs and significantly shorter time to market for quality lighting solutions.

Xicato's thermal validation program certifies that a luminaire is properly engineered to manage heat. Thermally validated luminaires are granted Xicato's five year color consistency and lumen maintenance warranty, the first of its kind in the lighting industry. Backed by Munich Re, the warranty guarantees that the color of light and light output from Xicato's modules will be maintained over time, ensuring that an installation looks right through its entire life.
