India’s affordable LED lighting for all government initiative, Ujala Scheme, is now being rolled out in the country’s westernmost state Gujarat, according to a report from The Financial Express.

The central government’s Ujala Scheme being rolled out in the state encourages consumers to choose energy efficient lighting options, such as LED lights.

Under the scheme, which is being launched in many other states, domestic consumers will provide LED bulbs at a subsidized rate of INR 80 to INR 85 (US $1.19 to US$ 1.27) per piece, slightly lower than the market price of INR 90 per piece.

The bulbs will come with three year warranty, and have a spec of 7W to 8W with luminosity of 900 lumens, said finance minister Saurabh Patel. 

An estimated 120 million LED bulbs will be distributed next year, which will benefit about 12.1 million consumers, said Patel.

Every household is entitled to a maximum of 10 LED bulbs in the first phase, costs of the bulb are charged through electricity bill in eight to ten instalments. 

The government will purchase the bulbs from Energy Efficient Services (EEEL) kiosks. Distribution of the bulbs will take place through sub-division offices of DISCOM, DISCOM bill collection centers across the state.
