Mumbai Central Depot Installs India's First 2-Way LED Pit Lighting for Rail Maintenance

Mumbai’s Western Railway (WR) has installed India’s first two-way switch-controlled LED lighting system at its Mumbai Central Coaching Depot, setting a benchmark in the railway sector for sustainable lighting. The new illumination system is designed with 120 LED pit lights (16W/48V each) and is controlled via two-way switches, allowing for segmented control across two circuits. This unique setup not only prevents energy wastage but also significantly extends the life of the LED fittings, reducing the frequency of replacements.

Previously, all pit lights would remain illuminated even when certain areas were not in use, leading to unnecessary energy consumption and quicker wear on the lighting fixtures. With the new system, WR employees can now control the lighting at 125-meter intervals, setting illumination levels to 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%, depending on specific requirements. This modular approach enhances flexibility while cutting down on energy usage. An official explained, “This is the first time multiple two-way switches are employed across Indian Railways, allowing staff to light only necessary sections rather than the entire pit.”

The Western Railway estimates that this system will save approximately 75% of the depot’s energy consumption—an equivalent of 7.3 megawatt-hours (MWh)—and reduce annual expenses by nearly Rs. 1 lakh. Furthermore, this reduction in energy use is projected to cut down carbon emissions by six tons annually. The implementation aligns with WR’s broader environmental goals, demonstrating a tangible step toward sustainable operations within the railway sector. By introducing a controlled lighting approach, WR is not only promoting energy efficiency but also setting a new benchmark for environmental stewardship within India’s extensive rail network. The success of this project may inspire similar installations across other Indian Railways depots, contributing to the sector’s commitment to energy conservation and carbon footprint reduction.
