Korean electronic conglomerate LG, a specialist in 65” large OLED TVs, might be incorporating flexible OLED technology in smartphones and tablets by 2017, according to IHS analyst.
The industry is close to launching bendable and rollable smartphones, tablets and wearable devices soon, and companies such as LG will be leading the launch of these devices, analyzed Jerry Kang, Senior Principal Analyst for Emerging Display Technologies and OLED at IHS.
Innovative OLED display technology can be used for foldable and rollable smartphones, tablets, and wearables.
The displays do not require back panel for backlighting, hence it will become thinner and much more energy efficient. The foldable screens present a fundamental change in smartphone and tablet manufacturing.
The renowned research institute estimated by 2022 the market would have shipped 433 million flexible displays, while 3.6 billion non-flexible displays will be shipped around the world.
