The solar-optoelectronics and LED industries have been identified as two rising-star sectors for priority development in Taiwan, with the annual production value of the two industries expected to reach NT$1 trillion (US$330 billion) by 2015, officials said Wednesday.
The LED industry production value of the island was NT$46 billion in 2008, and will see an 11-fold increase to NT$540 billion in 2015, said Director Yeh Hui-ching of the Bureau of Energy at a meeting of the Science and Technology Advisory Group of the Executive Yuan. The solar-optoelectronics production value stood at NT$101 billion last year, and is expected to grow to NT$450 billion by 2015, he said.
He also noted that 11 manufacturers in the LED section are planning to invest a total of NT$45.8 billion, NT$16.8 billion of which is awaiting government approval for investment in 26 projects.
