Phillips to set up LEDs manufacturing base in India

It’s reported that Philips has plans to manufacture LEDs lighting products in India in future. Philips, the largest player in the Indian lighting market, also intends to enhance the production capacity of its compact fluorescent light (CFL) plant based in Mohali (Punjab) by 50-60% by 2010.

Philips lighting division senior director Arjun Shahani pointed out that besides importing, they also make LED range with the help of vendors spread across Kolkata, Delhi and Daman. Depending on the demand, they may set up their own manufacturing base in India in future.

He added that the plans are in line with the company's vision to deliver energy conserving solutions, but he did not mention by when Philips will commence LED manufacturing in India and what would be the estimated investments. Philips introduced LED products in India in November 2007. LED lighting products' market is still at a nascent stage in India. The company already makes CFL in India, which is also one of the energy-efficient light sources. Philips Lighting senior director Mathew Job said that currently, Mohali plant meets half of the demand of Philips' CFL products in the country. The balance 50% demand is met through imports. they intend to meet at least 80% of the demand through Mohali plant by 2010.
