LED-made Olympic Rings Embrace Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport has installed GE Lighting’s 380 LEDs to celebrate London Olympic Games.

The LEDs, as well as 38 LED modules, placed inside two sets of Olympic rings, have been installed on either side of the Air Traffic Control Tower. The LEDs were installed into the rings at ground level and then the entire structure was mounted onto the tower at a height of 135 feet in six days.

The lighting is dimmable so the intensity of the white light produced can be adjusted accordingly. Manufactured and installed by design specialist Octink, each individual ring is 2m in diameter and made from an aluminium extrusion selected for its lightness and ability to be moulded into different shapes.

The Olympic Rings will be kept on the tower until the end of 2012.
