
According to MICROLED-info, sources indicate that Meta has begun collaborating with ams OSRAM to co-develop microLED technology. As the report notes, Meta’s Reality Labs has established a microLED R&D team in Regensburg, located near ams OSRAM’s main microLED research and production hub. Meta is actively hiring engineers for this site, and several key microLED specialists and business personnel have moved from ams OSRAM to Meta.
Though the information has yet to be confirmed, Meta has shown strong commitment to microLED technology. According to the report, the company signed a 2020 deal with Plessey to allocate all of Plessey’s microLED manufacturing capacity to Meta’s product development. Although there were earlier rumors suggesting Meta had dropped the project, Plessey and Meta jointly announced in early 2025 the creation of the world’s brightest red microLED display, designed for AR glasses.
The report adds that if Meta is indeed starting to work with ams OSRAM, this development could be particularly significant for Plessey. It is possible—and even likely—that Meta is collaborating with multiple microLED chip vendors.
In September 2024, Meta announced its Orion AR headset project, which features microLED technology. As the report notes, these were believed to be supplied by JBD.
Meanwhile, the company’s latest AI AR headset, the Ray-Ban Display, uses an LCoS display technology. According to TrendForce, this shift is expected to boost LCoS’s share of AR displays to 13% by 2026. By contrast, single-panel full-color LEDoS technology is not expected to achieve major breakthroughs in performance and cost until 2028. Until then, competition between the two display technologies is set to intensify.
