[News] LEDVANCE showcases Bremen’s Weserstadion with new lighting design and iconic floodlight towers – now more energy efficient than ever

News Source:

The floodlights at Bremen’s Weserstadion are shining in a whole new light: LEDVANCE, one of the world’s leading general lighting providers, has equipped the iconic stadium on the Osterdeich with a cutting-edge LED system. The new installation meets the highest UEFA standards and creates a spectacular atmosphere for players, fans, and TV audiences alike.

Bremen’s Weserstadion with new lighting design and iconic floodlight towers

LEDVANCE took on both planning and execution of the extensive upgrade. The previous system no longer met UEFA and DFL requirements due to uneven illumination. To maintain broadcasting licenses, modernisation was essential. With a concept that even meets the stringent UEFA Elite Class A standard, LEDVANCE won over SV Werder Bremen. At the same time, the stadium’s legendary floodlight towers were preserved as a defining architectural feature of the Weserstadion and seamlessly integrated into the new design.

Project manager Torsten Onasch: “From a maintenance perspective, it would have been easier to move all luminaires under the roofline. But the towers are a true landmark of Bremen. Leaving them out simply wasn’t an option.”

Energy savings of around 26 percent and 57 kilograms of CO₂ per operating hour

In just six weeks, a total of 264 FL Arena Quattro luminaires were installed – 140 on the towers and 124 beneath the roof. Each tower was also fitted with ten green FL Arena singlebeam spotlights to create striking visual accents. To comply with the UEFA Elite Class A requirements, additional fixtures had to be mounted on load-bearing structures. The surrounding lighting was also renewed and now shines in warm white light without dazzling the residents in the neighbourhood.

The new system doesn’t just impress with outstanding light quality; it is also highly energy efficient. Total connected load has been reduced from 506 kilowatts to 374 kilowatts, translating into energy savings of about 26 percent. At the same time, approximately 57 kilograms of CO₂ are saved per hour of operation. The LED luminaires are maintenance-free and only require cleaning every two years. The electronics, including the new power supply units (PSUs), were installed in the lower areas of the stadium, making them easily accessible and therefore easy to maintain. LEDVANCE also delivered and installed the new DMX control system, including both hardware and software.

Bernd Kobusch, Head of Territory DACH at LEDVANCE: “As the official lighting partner of SV Werder Bremen, we are delighted to have realized this project together and to see the club start the new season in a perfectly illuminated stadium. This project demonstrates how innovative, energy-efficient lighting solutions can be seamlessly combined with the unique character of a venue.”

Hans-Jörg Otto, Managing Director Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH: “With the new floodlight system, we have made the Weserstadion ready for the future. Our fans can look forward to an enhanced stadium experience, while as a club we are now perfectly positioned to meet all broadcasting requirements for the Bundesliga – and beyond. Moreover, the new floodlight system is an important component of our decarbonisation strategy.”
