Sunderland in UK Initiates Large Streetlight Project

News Source:

More than 23,000 sodium streetlights will be replaced with LEDs in a large streetlight project rolled out in Sunderland city in UK.

The total value of the streetlight projects implemented by Sunderland City Council will reach GBP 6 million (US $7.45 million) to offer more energy efficient lights that consume less than 50% of electricity.

City council authorities estimate the new LED lights will help slash energy costs by GBP 800,000 annually through lowered energy bills and less maintenance, said Councillor Michael Mordey.

The first phase of the streetlight conversion has witnessed nearly half of the streetlights being converted over a period of 18 months. Most installations were completed by Aurora Lighting with more than 1,000 LED streetlights installed in certain areas in the city.

Brian Hunter, Aurora’s contract delivery manager, said: “Street lighting technology has developed significantly in recent years, both in terms of performance and efficiency.
“It is therefore no surprise that Sunderland City Council is keen to take advantage of the benefits that come with upgrading to LED technology.
“We are delighted to be working with the local authority on this project.”
