According to data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva on March 17, 2025, China remained the top origin of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications in 2024, and Chinese display giant BOE ranked sixth worldwide with 1,959 applications, making into the top 10 for the ninth year running. This reflects BOE’s solid expertise and continuous innovation in display technology and also demonstrates its great competitiveness and resilience as a world-leading technology company.
Technology is the primary driving force for an enterprise’s high-quality development. Over the years, BOE has maintained its respect for technology and dedication to innovation. The company invests around 7 percent of its operating income in R&D each year, of which 1.5 percent of the income is spent on the R&D of basic and frontier technologies. More than 40 percent of its products are the world’s firsts. As of 2024, BOE had independently filed upwards of 100,000 patent applications. Of the new patent applications in the year, over 90 percent were patents for inventions, and above 33 percent were filed overseas, including the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South Korea. The patent applications spanned a wide range of fields such as flexible OLED, sensing, AI, and big data.
BOE had presided over the development and revision of 429 international and domestic technical standards. It is rapidly transitioning from a pioneer in technological innovation to a setter of industry standards, making significant contributions to standardization in flexible OLED, IoT application, eye-friendly display, and other fields. At the end of 2021, BOE launched the first technology brand in China’s semiconductor display sector, comprising the three sub-brands of ADS Pro, f-OLED, and α-MLED. This move has supercharged the sustained development of its core display business and consolidated its leadership in the global display sector.
BOE, a creator of numerous cutting-edge technologies, has been empowering industry development through technological innovation. It has rolled out a myriad of the world’s first technologies and mass-produced products, including the first-of-its-kind trifold display, flagship products armed with tandem technology, and the sought-after phones backed by its Full Display with Camera (FDC) technology. Meanwhile, BOE has been diving deep into emerging fields such as LTPO, Oxide, OLED, MLED, sensing, AIoT, smart engineering medicine, and smart mobility, so as to cultivate new growth drivers and create the “Nth curve” for industry development. In 2023, BOE proposed to foster three core technology sources guided by the “Empower IoT with Display” strategy. This initiative aims to build communication and cooperation platforms with universities, experts from industries, universities, and research institutes, leading technology companies, and ecosystem partners to seek breakthrough innovation in such fields as semiconductor display, IoT, AI, sensing, industry internet, and smart energy. Riding the wave of the digital age, BOE put forward the “AI+ ” strategy in 2024, focusing on the three core areas of AI+ Manufacturing, AI+ Products, and AI+ Operations. The goal is to make AI a key driver of its innovation-driven development. At present, BOE boasts 14 AI algorithms that won world championships and over 40 algorithms among the world’s top 10.
Thanks to its world-leading R&D strength and patented technologies, BOE not only holds top spots on the PCT patent application ranking, but also earns high recognition from multiple globally recognized agencies. According to the 2024 IFI CLAIMS report, BOE came in 12th among the Top 50 U.S. Patent Assignees, making into the top 20 for the seventh consecutive year. It is one of the two Chinese mainland companies on the top 20 list and the one and only Chinese company in the semiconductor display sector. Additionally, BOE has been selected into Clarivate’s Top 100 Global Innovators list for four consecutive years, which testifies to its strength in empowering industry transformation through technological innovation.
Guided by the “Empower IoT with Display” strategy, BOE will fully tap into the potential of IoT segments and continue to foster the “Nth curve” for high-quality development, speed up the commercialization and application of patents, and harness technological innovation to upgrade the industry value chain. The company will persist in collaborative innovation with ecosystem partners around the world to propel the global semiconductor display industry to greater heights.
