[News] LG Electronics Reportedly Develops 130-Inch MicroLED Signage Using LTPS TFT Glass

News Source:

Following rival Samsung, which has long sold LTPS TFT-based MicroLED signage, LG Electronics is now developing a 130-inch MicroLED product using LTPS TFT glass instead of a traditional PCB, as revealed by TheElec.

Notably, while Samsung sources its LTPS TFT panels from Taiwan’s AUO, LG’s earlier MicroLED signage relied solely on PCB, leaving little room for collaboration with LG Display, according to the report.

As SamMobile previously reported, Samsung aimed to make MicroLED TVs more affordable by replacing traditional PCB with LTPS TFT panels, with its first LTPS TFT MicroLED TVs launching in 2022.

TheElec suggests LG Display is creating 22.3-inch MicroLED modules with the LTPS TFT for the signage. A full 130-inch display is completed by connecting 32 of these modules, featuring LED chips measuring 50 micrometers or smaller, the report adds.

As TheElec explains, unlike PCB, LTPS TFT offers higher electron mobility and allows pixel-driving circuits to be integrated into the panel’s backplane, reducing signal delays and simplifying design.

However, a commercial launch date for the product has yet to be set, as the MicroLED signage market remains small, TheElec notes. Sources cited by the report also said that LG has no current plans for a MicroLED TV, with OLED TVs expected to remain the company’s priority.
