LED Technology Breakthrough: LED Performance Advances with Perovskite

Scientists have continuously worked on improving the performance of LED. LED based on Perovskite (PLED) could be a new approach. Scientists have found out that the performance of the material surpasses OLED and that it could be processed with low cost solutions. Two research teams have published their studies of perovskite LED on Nature in October, notifying the potential of its further development.

One of the researches was led by Yu Cao from Nanjing Tech University. The team optimized the process solution to make perovskites spontaneously form distinct submicrometre-scale structures, which can efficiently extract light from the device and retain wavelength- and viewing-angle-independent electroluminescence. Through the structure, researchers have achieved an external quantum efficiency of 20.7 percent and an energy-conversion efficiency of 12 percent, which exceeded the best performing OLED, claimed the research.

Meanwhile, the other team which gathered researchers from Huaqiao University, Nanyang Technological University and University of Toronto, has boosted the quantum efficiency by managing the compositional distribution in the device. The Researchers tried to balance electrons and holes injected into the perovskite and achieved 20.3 percent external quantum efficiency.

These two researches have respectively increased the external quantum efficiency of PLEDs which has been an important technological barrier, indicating a breakthrough of the development in PLED.
