Photolithography for the manufacture of semiconductors and printed circuit boards (PCBs) is another major application for mercury lamps classified under item 4(f) in the exemption list of the RoHS Directive. This is in addition to curing and photolithography for the manufacture of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which were described in the previous posts.
Photolithography is a lithography process in which a substrate coated with resist is exposed to light or an electron beam to draw a designed circuit. High-pressure mercury short arc lamps have been mainly used as the light ...

What is Human Centric Lighting (HCL)? Asking ten different people within the lighting industry may result in ten different answers. Nichia’s perspective remains that true Human Centric Lighting effects people’s daily lives via many different paths, including methods that help synchronize people’s circadian rhythms, thus improving alertness during the day and sleep at night. The simplest form could be the visual element of color tunable lighting which synchronizes the lighting color with the colors of the sky throughout the day. In addition to the visual elemen...

Micro-LED TVs are something of a white whale for the biggest TV manufacturers. The display technology has plenty of potential, promising emissive pixels and infinite contrast without sacrificing brightness levels and deep blacks. It also doesn’t suffer from the degradation in performance associated with organic display types like the best OLED TVs.
Thanks to how micro-LED TVs are manufactured – with clusters of “micrometer-scale LEDs”, or “almost microscopic lights” transferred onto larger LED mo...

Heat and ultraviolet are used to cure paints such as coatings to protect the surface of car bodies, wooden floors, and plastic containers. Medium-pressure mercury lamps are the primary light source for ultraviolet curing (UV curing).
Originally, heat and drying were mainly used to cure paints, but after the invention of the mercury lamp, the development of materials that can be cured with ultraviolet increased over time, and curing with ultraviolet became and remains widely used.
Compared to curing with heat, UV curing can be used for heat-sensitive materials and can be done in a...

The lighting that affects human biological rhythms which was mentioned briefly in the previous post is generally referred to as “circadian lighting.” The word “circadian” originating from the Latin words “circa” meaning “approximately” and “diem” meaning “a day.”
Many people have experienced feeling refreshed by the morning sun, whereas feeling sleepy in a darkened room. The biological function of adjusting circadian rhythms through exposure to sunlight continues to occur in the human body today, even after milli...

It has been 28 years since the white LED launched, which Nichia realized by combining a blue LED with yellow phosphor. Since then, LED technology has replaced incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps, becoming the predominant light source. The performance of LEDs continues to evolve daily, and now their luminous efficiency can well exceed 200 lm/W, enabling spaces to be brightly illuminated with even less energy. By developing LEDs that can contribute to energy saving, Nichia aims to support people’s lives under rising energy costs. On the other hand, as the dema...

Projectors are commonly used in meetings and seminars, and their primary light source is still ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps. As the name implies, ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps contain mercury and generate concerns regarding environmental pollution. For that reason, they are expected to be replaced by solid-state light sources which do not contain mercury such as LDs (Laser Diodes) and LEDs. However, due to cost and other reasons, this replacement is taking time, and in the RoHS Directive, ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps for projectors with an output of ≥2,000 lm ...

Lumileds’ R&D team realizes Lambertian distribution from microLEDs
Lumileds has realized significant External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) performance for MicroLEDs in the past years. EQE, is the ratio between the energy contained in the light emitted from the LED and the energy in electrons injected into the semiconductor material. However, for microLEDs, and display applications in particular, EQE on its own is not a sufficient measure of performance. To properly assess the efficiency of a microLED, one must also be able to measure the direction...

In particular, the team developed an optimized indium gallium nitride (InGaN) multiple quantum well (MQW) structure with improved performance at lower current injection (~10A/cm2) and lower driving voltages as suitable for the advanced micro-displays used in augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) setups where the higher cost of FS-GaN can be compe...
