SSL Ecosystem Summit: CRI to Be Replaced with Other Color Standards Soon

News Source:

Industry experts that attended SSL Ecosystm Summit noted the Color Rendering Index (CRI) often used to define the color quality in LED lights is an insufficient color perception measurement, and might be replaced with other color measurement standards soon, according to an All LED Lighting report.

Terry McGowan, director of engineering for the ALA pointed out CRI is insufficient in representing color perception. McGowan announced in August the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has recommended governments to stop using CRI to define energy regulations. The color standard will probably be replaced with the combination of Color Quality Standard (CGS) and Gamut Area Index (GAI).

N. Nanrandran, director of research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center said the university’s LRC ASSIST program is now working on a combining CRI and GAI, suggesting a replacement for CRI is on its way.
