Netflix releases a tutorial on how to create your own Netflix socks that pause your TV for you when you fall asleep. (Netflix/LEDinside)

As some people welcome the long holiday ahead, binge- watching is sometimes one of the most popular activity to do in midwinter. However, accidentally falling asleep and waking up confused many episodes later, probably is not a welcoming way to celebrate Christmas. To stop this, some brilliant minds come up with a rather funny but effective solution, except it involves intensive DIY and very crafty hands.
It looks like a pair of comfy Christmas socks, but Netflix socks do more than warming your feet. The sensor in “Netflix socks” detects when you’ve nodded off, and sends a signal to pause your TV program for you. The Netflix socks uses the method of actigraphy to monitor sleep from outside the body. The accelerometer detects when you are not moving for a prolonged period of time and the LED lights situated on the cuff of the socks would light up, ready to fire signal to the TV. If you move immediately, the signal will not be sent. But if you fall asleep, the IR LED will send a signal to pause the TV program. Not to worry, the accelerometers is extremely sensitive, they detect the slightest motion so any movement you make when watching the program will be detected.

According to Netflix, you will need the following materials: knit socks, Arduino microcontroller, IR LEDs, LED indicator light, battery, momentary button, accelerometer, 12” x 12” piece of felt.

Netflix chooses to use felt backing to hold all the micro- devices together. Make sure you leave the red LED light at the outside of the felt so you can see it light up when it detects zero movement.
After soldering and coding the Arduino board, you can seal the felt with fabric tape.
Now you should be ready to enjoy watching your favorite series without missing any episodes when dozing.
