The New iPhone Rumored to Size Up to 5.8-inches OLED Displays in 2017

Apple is rumored to size up iPhone from 5.5- inches to 5.8-inches and swap to OLED screens, the Telegraph, cited a DIGITIMES report.

The new larger handsets from Apple might not be manufactured until 2017, therefore upcoming iPhone 7 will not be a large one while it’s highly possible that the model following it, the iPhone 7s could make an appearance as such.

Meanwhile, after the Cupertino giant’s discussion with Korean OLED suppliers, including Samsung and LG in December 2015 over increasing the production of OLED screens, it’s expected to adopt flexible displays for the upcoming iPhone 7s range.

OLED displays are generally brighter and consume lower power than LEDs and the flexibility also open up new design possibility for curved screens in future Apple products.

LG Display announced the plan to invest KRW 1.05 trillion (US $871.5 million) in a flexible screen production plant in the Gumi Plant in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea, which can also be found in Apple’s supplier list.

The new plant will have the capacity to produce more than 200 cuts of 5.5- inch sized screens from a single plastic substrate sheet, which is the same size as an iPhone 6 Plus display, according to LG. Mass production, however, might not begin till early 2017.
