Innolux at CES 2018 released a 10.1-inch Mini LED automotive display, while AUO in March demonstrated a 27-inch Mini LED-lit LCD monitor, a 15.6-inch Mini LED-based laptop, and a 2-inch Mini LED display for VR devices. Judging by the applications they disclosed, the two Taiwan-based companies seem to target their Mini LED products at niche markets with higher margins.
Active matrix (AM) Mini LED is a transitional technology before Micro LED actually enters the market, said Chin-Lung Ting, Director & Executive Vice President at Innolux. The AM Mini LED backlight of the panel is integrated with a flexible substrate. The flexibility of the automotive LCD display allows various types of form factor, catering to a wide range of design requirements for futuristic vehicles.
Rumor has it that the Taiwanese display manufacturer is in talks with some of the major automakers regarding the introduction of the display. The mass production of the product is scheduled in 2020.
It is certain that Innolux is in the supply chain of high-end vehicle manufacturing and it is looking to develop products for other applications. The company anticipates commercializing its inventions by the end of this year. More details will be revealed in June.
Michael Tsai, President and Chief Operating Officer at AUO, disclosed the company’s strategy in line with trends in the high-end display market in 2018. AUO will continue to expand its product portfolio for as many applications as possible. It will add more advanced technologies to the upcoming products to support new capabilities.
Its Mini LED-based products will be shipped in the second half of 2018.
Considering the production cost of Mini LED is still relatively high, AUO will first launch the Mini LED-lit gaming monitor, according to Tsai. The company expects customers in the gaming monitor segment to have a higher price tolerance.
Mini LED is able to enhance the brightness, improve the dynamic contrast, and refine the grayscale of those products for niche markets, Tsai stated.
