Few days ago, Walmart announced that it has reached an agreement to buy AR technology developer Memomi, aiming to fulfil its commitment to frictionless and omnichannel optical care. The acquisition is scheduled to be accomplished in the coming weeks, after which Memomi employees will join the Walmart Global Tech organization.
Since 2019, Memomi has provided digital measurement services for all the Walmart and Sam’s Optical customers across 2,800+ Walmart Vision Centers and 500 Sam’s Clubs. The startup also supports the Optical ecommerce experience on SamsClub.com. Acquiring Memomi marks Walmart’s next step in creating personalized optical care services with good value.
The acquisition will further promote Walmart’s Health & Wellness strategy, whereby the retail giant can provide integrated healthcare services through various channels, utilizing data and technology to improve engagement, health equity and outcomes.

David Reitnauer, vice president of Health & Wellness Specialty Services at Walmart said, “Customers are searching for access to care using digital approaches, including buying a pair of glasses. This acquisition meets our mission for health and wellness, helping us provide accessible care for communities we serve.”
Memomi is a leading technology supplier of AR try-on for eyewear. The firm helps customers try on glasses virtually, creating seamless, relaxing and fun omnichannel experiences. In addition to the try-on experiences, Memomi offers accurate, simple measurement services in its stores, allowing customers to—once they choose the glasses they want—save more time with the store cutting more costs.
Ofer Saban, CTO at Memomi pointed out, “Walmart launched our digital try-on and contactless digital measurement series within a short time, which has demonstrated its strong determination to fulfil customers’ demand for digital care in stores and at home.”
“We are pleased to welcome Memomi to Walmart and add its expertise to our leading VR technology, which is now changing retail experiences for our customers and members” said Cheryl Ainoa, senior vice president of New Businesses & Emerging Tech at Walmart Global Tech. (Source: Sina VR)
