Korea Photonics Technology Research Institute makes new progress in Micro LED luminous efficiency

News Source:

On October 17, Korean media reported that the Korea Photonics Technology Institute (KOPTI) announced the successful development of highly efficient and fine Micro LEDs. The internal quantum efficiency of Micro LEDs can be maintained within 90% and is not affected by chip size and different injections. Effect of current density.

This Micro LED was jointly developed by the team of Dr. Jong hyup Baek of the Optical Semiconductor Display Research Department, the ZOGAN Semi team led by Dr. Woong ryeol Ryu, and Professor Jong in Shim of the Department of Nano-Optoelectronics of Hanyang University. The product solves the problem of Micro LED due to chip size The problem of rapid decrease in luminous efficiency caused by shrinkage and increase of injected current.

It is reported that not only does the luminous efficiency of Micro LEDs below 20μm decrease rapidly, but also the non-luminous composite loss of Micro LEDs increases significantly within the low current range (0.01A/cm²~1A/cm²) required to drive display panels. At present, the industry can alleviate the above problems to a certain extent by introducing a passivation process on the side of the chip, but it cannot fundamentally solve it.

KOPTI introduced that this research team used the new structure to reduce the stress in the epitaxial layer, improve the luminous efficiency, and suppress the physical stress changes of Micro LED under any external electric field or structure. Therefore, even if the size of Micro LED is reduced, the new structure can still significantly reduce surface non-luminous recombination loss and maintain high luminous efficiency without the need for a passivation process.

KOPTI said that the team has successfully verified the application of high-efficiency and fine Micro LED in blue light, as well as gallium nitride green and red light devices, and is expected to produce full-color gallium nitride Micro LED displays through this technology in the future.

Shin Yong-jin, director of the Korea Photonics Technology Research Institute, said that the low-power, high-efficiency Micro LED developed this time is the best light source for ultra-high-resolution displays and is expected to accelerate the commercial development of ultra-high-resolution displays in the future.
