And it has also shown the possibility to expand the LED market into the farming field. With LED supplementary lights as artificial light source in farming, the quality and quantity of plants will be improved and the income of the farmers will also increase.

Incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and sodium lamps have been generally used in the past. While the new LED lights will offer higher power efficiency and longer lifespan without carbon discharge. According to a report of Rural Development Association of Korea, by replacing the incandescent lamps with LED lights for supplementary lighting in 3,000 hectare of farm, about 70% of the energy will be saved, which amounts to $12M per year.

What’s more, with the LED artificial lighting, farming will be possible even in the dessert or the Artic region. Therefore, the application of LED is expected to be a solution of the food problems in many countries.
