LED chip manufacturer Chi Mei Technology Corp went out of business last month after a surprise exodus by the company’s board members. A staggering amount of NT$5.6 billion in unpaid debts has lead to anger from creditor banks. The phones were ringing off the hook yesterday (7) for Chi Mei’s top shareholder Innolux with calls from legal persons and investors. Innolux expressed that during today’s (8) online conference, chairman Tuan Hsing-chien will be there himself to offer explanation.

It is reported that OSRAM agreed to sell its traditional factory located in Shaoxing, China, because Siemens' subsidiary OSRAM achieved poor performance, and lighting equipment department intends to streamline business before it is listed to focus on LED lighting development. Osram illuminates the tenth cruise ship of Aida fleet with 9,000 lamps and a “strip” of more than 1 kilometers of LEDs. Aidastella, also called "the swimming city," has a total length of 253 meters and a width of 32 meters, and offers space for 1097 passengers. "Cruise ships with their complex range of demands are in reality lighthouses for lighting applications," commented Martin Nüboldt, manager of the lighting project from Osram. With LED lighting market on the rise, international lighting giant Philips Lumileds is officially entering the mid-power LED market in 2013. In response to mid-power LED market demands, the company has added Luxeon 3535 packaging component series to their lighting packages. At the same time, the company is also actively entering low-power market and promoting Luxeon 4014 LED package components. It is estimated Lumileds will continue to release new low-power LED products in the second half of 2013. The trend of big international lighting manufacturers entering the low-mid power LED indicates intensified competition in the LED lighting market.

The creditor banks for Chi Mei Lighting Technology Corporation are demanding the company’s shareholder groups like Innolux Corportation and Chi Mei Corporation to repay the company’s debt. However, Innolux Corportation’s response was that the responsibility for resolving the debt was solely that of the creditor banks and that all Chi Mei employees are welcome to work at Innolux. Cree introduces the new 4000-lumen LMH2 that delivers the industry’s highest-performance LED module. The barrier-breaking module produces the same or better quality light as 70-watt ceramic metal halide (CMH) lamps while consuming half the power and lasting three times longer — a first in the LED industry. “The new 4000-lumen LMH2 LED Module is an ideal LED light source to replace 70-W ceramic metal halide in many lighting applications,” said Quinten van de Vrie, director, LEDs Progress. 

Although the market is dominated by low priced direct-lit LED TV’s, top international brands are planning to reduce direct-lit product shipments, due to impact from the end of China’s energy-saving subsidies and increased costs accrued from slimmer product designs. According to recent information, though, top international manufacturers are cooperating with secondary optic lens manufacturers to expand lighting angle from 140-150 degrees to 160 degrees.
