Cree, Inc. announces that Fairview, Texas, has joined the LED City® initiative, an international program that promotes the deployment of energy-efficient LED lighting. The newly constructed, four-lane Fairview Parkway, designed specifically to be lit with LEDs, features 82 LED street lights from EvoLucia, a division of Sunovia Energy Technologies, Inc.

Wavien, Inc. today announces that its patented Premien LED projector technology produces output in excess of 200 lumens using a single white, 50 W LED. The output efficiency of Premien technology, which is currently available for portable projector applications, is up to two times higher than the competing LED technologies. Wavien continues to optimize the system performance of projectors using Premien technology and expects that next-generation performance will increase to over 300 lumens.

Researchers at the University of Connecticut have made a new material that emits bright white light by adding fluorescent dyes to DNA and then spinning the DNA strands into nanofibers, according to a paper published online in the journal Angewandte Chemie. The researchers create white-light-emitting devices by coating ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the material. They are even able to fine-tune the white color tone to make it warm or cold.

The City of Danville is likely to become the first LED city in Virginia, the United States. City officials say that the city has received a 50 thousand dollar grant for it to switch to new LED lights in different parts of the city. LEDs use less energy, last longer and are more environmentally friendly. So far, they've been installed at the water plant, and at the adult detention center.

LSI Industries Inc. (Nasdaq:LYTS) Wednesday announced it has completed the acquisition of AdL Technology and related companies (AdL Engineering and Kelmilfeen), privately owned and based in Columbus, Ohio. Consideration for the asset purchase of these businesses consisted of 2,469,676 shares of LSI's unregistered common stock, cash of $1,328,000, and assumed indebtedness of $3,526,000. The management team of AdL has entered into employment agreements and will continue in their current positions to manage the business for LSI.

Since the first light bulb was invented in the 1800’s new lamp technology has evolved. When the fluorescent tube was invented in 1929, sales of traditional light bulbs plummeted, and then in the 1970’s along came the compact fluorescent, since then new variations have evolved, sales of the former types have virtually disappeared, but the fundamental lamp design has remained unchanged, using a heating element to ignite gases and produce light. The use of a heating element results in energy being wasted as heat as opposed to generating light.

The Wal-Mart Superstore, the first retail store to feature light-emitting diode (LED) parking lot site lighting, based on specifications developed by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Retailer Energy Alliance, will reopen on July 15, 2009, in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Superstore will serve as a test site to determine the viability of expanding LED parking lot lights at Wal-Mart stores nationwide.

Macroblock introduces a step-down, non-isolated, and high efficiency AC - DC controller, MBI6901, that can deliver constant current to light up high brightness LED and stabilize the LED lighting system. The MBI6901 is able to drive external MOSFET current up to 3A for T-8 CFL replacement, general illumination and power supply for light panel. The MBI6901 accepts universal AC input from 80VAC to 265VAC and regulates the accuracy of preset output current within ±5% by switching the external MOSFET.

Researchers from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan have developed an organic light-emitting diode (OLEDs) with a range of color temperatures that fully covers those of daylight at different times and regions (2300K to 8200 K).
