Philips Lumileds yesterday announced immediate availability of its breakthrough LUXEON Rebel phosphor converted amber (PC Amber) LED. The new LUXEON Rebel sets performance standards for color stability and light output performance. Users will see 2-5 times more light output and dramatically less color shift compared to typical amber LEDs. LUXEON Rebel PC Amber delivers typical flux of 70 lumens at 350mA.

Supertex (NASDAQ: SUPX), a provider of high voltage analog and mixed signal integrated circuits (ICs), has recently introduced the HV9985, a three channel LED driver IC designed to provide high LED current accuracy through closed loop control of the output current. The IC is ideal for driving multiple strings of backlight or edgelight LEDs in LCD televisions.

Taxpayers could save millions if governments replaced incandescent traffic signal bulbs with LEDs according to an audit released by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The audit found that the City of Binghamton, which replaced all incandescent bulbs with LEDs in 2002, has produced average annual savings of $49,800 since 2002.  Binghamton is now paying 59 percent less for traffic signal operation than it did before 2002. The audit is part of DiNapoli's efforts to help identify ways that local governments can save energy and reduce costs.

austriamicrosystems has added the AS1115 to its LED driver portfolio, which combines display driving and key scanning functionality to provide a simple front panel solution. National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: NSM) Monday introduced the industry's first high-side light-emitting diode (LED) driver that enables dual LED operation for the camera flash function in portable, battery-powered multimedia devices. The LM3554, a member of National's PowerWise(R) energy-efficient product family, drives one or two high-current LEDs for flash applications in handheld devices such as mobile phones, smartphones and portable scanners.

GE Lumination, the LED business of GE Consumer & Industrial, has released the new Tetra® miniMAX LED System, which is claimed to be “the brightest solution for shallow-depth channel letter applications available today”. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recently released revised L Prize competition requirements. As the first government-sponsored technology competition, the L Prize is designed to accelerate development of high-quality, high-efficiency solid-state lighting products to replace the common light bulb. The competition will award significant cash prizes, plus opportunities for federal purchasing agreements, utility programs, and other incentives for winning products.

Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2009 — Taiwanese Manufacturers Everlight As Taiwan’s largest LED packager, Everlight certainly did not miss the event this year. Apart from LED components, the company also exhibited its LED lights for indoor and outdoor use. Shanghai Yaguang Lighting Co, Everlight’s China-based partner, also attended the event. As a result, the same LED lights could be seen in two exhibition halls.

ON Semiconductor has introduced the NCP5680 supercapacitor-optimized LED flash driver capable of delivering up to 10A for photo flash and video light in ultra-slim camera phones and compact digital cameras.

LEDtronics last week added the T8/bi-pin LED lighting tubes to its green-technology lineup. The series LED48T8-288-001W bi-pin LED fits into standard G13 bases and is designed to directly replace conventional T8 fluorescent tubes that provide general lighting for commercial, residential and architectural lighting applications, according to the company.

Brighter, less costly and more efficient, LEDs (light emitting diodes) are making their way into a wide variety of automotive applications, ranging from center high-mount stop lamps (CHMSLs) and turn signals to vehicle cockpits and headlights. "More and more automotive functions are using LEDs," says Viren Merchant, engineering manager for exterior electronics at Visteon Corp., a tier-one automotive electronics supplier. "In the beginning, it was just CHMSLs. Now it's everything from backup lights to rear fogs to daytime running lights."

LG Electronics is fighting back against Samsung's growing grip on the crucial new growth engine in the LED television market, according to an article on The Korea Times. Kwon Il-keun, senior VP of LG's LCD Technology Lab, spent most time of a 20-minute presentation talking of the merits of the company’s LED TVs.

Opto Tech Corp., a Taiwan-based LED manufacturer, has recently won the order to supply over 30,000 LED (light emitting diode) streetlights for the LED streetlight project in Guangzhou, China. As part of its energy-saving program, China is to install over 1.4 million streetlights nationwide by the end of 2009, which will cost an estimated RMB 20 billion. (US$2.9 billion at US$1:RMB6.7).

LG Display Co Ltd announced that it has formed a strategic alliance with Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd, a Japanese provider of OLED materials, to develop high-performance OLED displays. The two companies have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) which includes technology development and cross licensing of patented OLED-related technologies.

OptoElectronix announced a unique LED-based lighting module that enables luminaire manufacturers to accelerate adoption of SSL (solid state lighting) for commercial lighting fixtures. It delivers the same light output as a 60-watt incandescent bulb at just one-fourth the power and has a 50,000-hour life.

In Bangor, Maine, the U.S., the city councilors have recently approved the recommendation to replace more than 300 streetlights in the downtown area of the city with LED lights, according to an article in the Bangor Daily News. The switch will cost $523,000. Broken down per light, it will cost the city an average of about $1,600 for each LED conversion. The new lights will be paid for with a combination of federal stimulus funding and downtown tax increment financing dollars. After the switch, an estimated $34,000 could be saved every year in electricity.

Market for LEDs in notebooks will grow from around $200 million in 2008 to over $800 million in 2010, according to a new research report available at Electronics.ca.

Future Lighting Solutions yesterday announced the release of SSL Designer, the first online design tool for solid-state lighting applications that combines the ability to set and optimize design parameters based on target specifications with the ability to calculate system costs and payback schedules. The new software – intended as the starting point for developing LED systems – facilitates and accelerates engineering design decisions as well as managing the tradeoffs between performance and costs.

European and U.S. Manufacturers in the Exhibition Cree Cree, the leading U.S.-based LED manufacturer, had its booth in Exhibition Hall 1.1. The major products exhibited by the company were LED components, which attracted a number of visitors. As the company’s featured product on the show, the XP-E,MC-E series, boasts its compact size and high luminous efficacy. The MC-E series, on the other hand, emphasizes multi-chip technology with its color-adjustable function.

LG Electronics (LG) on Thursday unveiled two new ultra-slim "full LED" LCD TVs in Seoul. And the company said it was aiming to sell as many as 5 million units in 2010.

Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2009 was held at Guangzhou Pazhou Complex from June 09 to 12. At the show this year, the 12 exhibition halls were filled with some 1600 exhibitors, compared to 1676 manufacturers last year.
