New Panasonic device links mobile phones to home handsets

Panasonic said on  June 11th, 2008 it was releasing a new mobile phone accessory which connects Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones to cordless handsets in the home. LED-ing the Way: Mayor Urges New Efficient Lighting

It's possible that starting next year, all new commercial buildings and homes constructed in the village will be lit by environmentally friendly light bulbs, also known as LEDs. Village President Brian LeClercq's goal is to lunge forward with his plan to make Oswego the greenest community in the region, by possibly adding an ordinance about LEDs -- more energy efficient and expensive than other lights -- to the village's building code. LeClercq introduced this idea at the Mayors and Managers meeting for Kendall County leaders in Oswego last week.

Saga University Researchers Tout Green LED Manufacturing Cost Improvement

A research team at Saga University in Saga, Japan, has created a new green LED that the researchers contend is only a fraction of the cost, but can be as energy efficient, according to an article in Nikkei Net. Instead of using the more expensive molecular beam epitaxy, the researchers used what the article called thermal diffusion. LEDs will lead, and soon. A new report by iSuppli says 90% of notebook PC screens will be made of light emitting diodes within four years, up from a mere 3% last year. The research firm says sales of notebook PCs with LED screens will jump to more than 17 million units this year from about 3 million last year. This is good news to makers of LED chips. Such companies include Monolithic Power Systems, (MPWR) Cree, (CREE) Philips Lumileds, (PHG) Agilent (A) and privately held Luminous Devices.

Fate of LED screens depends on committee's recommendation

All light emitting diode (LED) screens installed by the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) on the city's main roads have been switched off till a six-member committee of the PHA issues its recommendations in this regard, said a PHA official on Monday. The PHA installed LED screens on The Mall, the Canal, Kalma Chowk, Defence Housing Authority, Jail Road, Park Lane, Gulberg, Cavalry Grounds and Cantt during the previous government's regime.

Ingolstadt, Germany - Audi is offering the Audi R8 supercar with the option of full LED headlamp technology in addition to daytime running lights.The immediate launch of the technology required a waiver by the European Union with the LED headlamps more closely resembling daylight and greater contrast easier on the human eye, the car maker said.The 3,590 euro option rounds off the list of options available for the mid-engined 420 hp sports car that sells for 104,400 euros (161,957 dollars) in the basic version in Germany.

Linear Technology Corp's new LT3755 LED controller has a 4.5 to 40V input-voltage range. It drives external FETs to illuminate as many as 14 1A white LEDs from a nominal 12V input, delivering in excess of 50W. The part uses a high-side-current sense, enabling designers to use it in boost, buck, buck-boost, SEPIC (single-ended-primary-inductance-converter), and flyback topologies. The LT3755 can deliver efficiencies of more than 94% in boost mode. A frequency-adjustment pin permits the user to program the frequency between 100kHz and 1MHz.
