Street lamps with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ OSLON SSL LEDs as light source have been installed in three districts in Beijing. These 120W/180W LED fixtures will save up to 50% in energy consumption compared to the 250W/400W sodium lamps they replace. In addition, these LED street lamps provide uniform lighting for drivers and pedestrians.
The LED street lamps are in Ti Yu Guan Road, Bei Yuan East Road, Gong Yi West Bridge and Xin Fa Di Road. They are busy roads in the Dong Cheng District, Chao Yang District and Da Xing District with a lot of traffic. Therefore, the lighting quality cannot be compromised when the traditional lamps are being replaced.
“The ideal illumination angle for street lighting is 120°x 80°. We chose OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ OSLON SSL LEDs because they have a beaming angle of 80°, making it extremely easy to incorporate into secondary optics and with our lighting distribution technology for achieving uniform illumination.” said Mr Bing HU, General Manager of HBTechnology CAST Group, the company which builds and installs the LED lamps. “Besides, these LEDs have long lifetime span, minimizing maintenance work and disruption to these busy roads.”
Most important, these installations are pilot LED street lighting applications for the city of Beijing. The illumination quality and energy savings will bear important implications for subsequent LED street lighting applications.
“We are delighted that our technology delivers success in LED street lighting applications in the capital city,” said Kai-chong Cheng, Marketing Director of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Asia Ltd. “Our OSLON SSL LED has a footprint of only 3mm x 3mm and is the smallest high-luminance LED in a 1-W package available on the market today. It delivers directed light with outstanding efficiency. This enables cost-efficient, resource-saving designs requiring not only fewer LEDs, but also fewer and smaller peripheral components. This will mean major added savings when the LED street lighting application is extended to the rest of the city.”
With the launch of the “10 Cities, 10,000 Lamps” project in China, LED street lighting is being installed in various cities in China. As the largest LED street lighting market in the world, accounting for approximately 50%, the country is expected to continue its leadership in the market.
