Traxon Technologies illuminates National Stadium, Warsaw, host of the 2012 European Soccer Championship opening game

When the whistle blows at the opening match of the 2012 European Soccer Championship on June 8, Warsaw’s National Stadium will shine brightly, enhanced by the latest LED lighting and control technology. Poland, one of the tournament’s host countries, relies on Traxon’s experience in illuminating sporting venues to capture the world’s attention.

The dynamic lighting concept of the new stadium’s façade was developed by Lichtvision, Berlin. The goal was to create a landmark which can be seen from the upper ancient centre of Warsaw, leading to the lower modern part of the city. Traxon became involved in the project in its early stages via Lichtvision, to help transform their creative vision into reality.

Approximately 1,700 customized Traxon Liner Shield AC XB-36 with red/white LEDs were installed on the stadium’s façade to light its shell in Poland’s national colors, red and white. Controlled by an e:cues Lighting Control Engine (LCE) and Butlers, the façade can be transformed into a giant media screen displaying game results, goals, and other information. An additional 72 Wall Washer AC XB-36 Cold White installed atop 72 columns surrounding the venue, dim on and off as if there are sparkling stars floating above the stadium.

Stephan Wittekind, Business Development Director at Traxon, said, “The highlight of this concept is that the fixtures are completely integrated into the semi-transparent structure. Therefore, they are not visible during the day, and the appearance of the stadium is completely different by night.”

The stadium was honored with two CEEQA (Central & Eastern European Real Estate Quality Award 2102) Awards this year.

“We are proud to be part of the creation of this new lighting highlight,” stated Stephan Wittekind. “The awards are the acknowledgement of a successful collaboration between the architect, lighting designer, and manufacturer.”
