The First Local Authority in the United Kingdom to Use LED Street Lights

Recently, Bath & North East Somerset Council is celebrating that being the first local authority in the United Kingdom to replace all main road lights with LED street lights.

After this conversion, the energy consumption is expected to be decreased by over 1.5 Kilowatt Hours (Kwh) and the council is likely to save about £200,000 per year in electricity bills. For the environment, carbon emissions are expected to be reduced by more than 780 tones.

There were some intelligent lighting lanterns installed, which will reduce energy usage by adjusting their output in line with the traffic conditions on the road. The council also added LED lighting on all zebra crossings across the town, which will further reduce energy consumption by another 77,000Khw per annum.

Councillor Caroline Roberts said: "Unlike many other town halls, Bath & North East Somerset Council has used the LED street lights to save tens of thousands of pounds on energy costs, cutting carbon emissions. The numbers involved in this project were really amazing. We've strengthened cooperation with the private sector, especially Philips, to provide benefits for local people."

The project has also been authorized by the Local Government News Street Design Awards 2013, as a winner in the public lighting category. The award ceremony is going to be held in July 2013.
