Apple Rumored to be Developing Curved Screen Smartphones

An earlier report by Women Citizen projecting Apple’s smartphone dominance is to be challenged by Samsung’s AMOLED technology has been proven wrong by a recent Bloomberg report. Apple has no intention of being left behind by Samsung in the race of developing curved smartphones, according to the Bloomberg report. Citing an unnamed source familiar with the new project, the report noted Apple is developing a new generation of smartphones with curved glass and enhanced sensors.

The iPhone 5S has kept Apple's classical smartphone look, but consumers will probably be seeing a completely new innovative phone design with the launch of curved OLED phones in 2014. (LEDinside/Apple)

Two models of the presumably new OLED iphones are planned for release sometime in 2H14, said the source. The phones will feature a much larger display with glass that curves downward at the edges. Sensors will also be able to distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen and might be included into subsequent models. The OLED phone’s much larger displays will also be closer in size to Samsung’s Galaxy Round, and are Apple’s largest phones to date. The screens will be 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, close to Samsung’s 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3 that was launched in September.

A Wall Street Journal blog entry analyzed the curved screen display is an indication that Apple will be abandoning LCD displays for OLED screens, and be a major drive behind making OLED the mainstream display technology in the future. It appears Apple is joining LG and Samsung in their race of adopting OLED technology.
