Iconic Constructions Illuminated in Memory of Nelson Mandela

Landmarks around the world were bathed in the South African colors last week to mourn the passing of Nelson Mandela. Countries lit up major buildings to pay tribute to this inspirational figure.

The Empire State building in New York tweeted a picture of the building lit up with the colors of the South African flag. The Eiffel Tower in Paris also sported the colors of green, yellow, red, and blue in honor of the late South African president. Brisbane Story Bridge shone brightly with 500 LEDs in the colors of the South African flag during the memorial service and funeral as tribute.

Nelson Mandela (18 July, 1918 – 5 December, 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist, revolutionary and politician. He was also a philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He broke down South Africa’s Apartheid and was named as the Father of South Africa.
