Emerging developments in the LED lighting industry has led to major Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, American and European manufacturers expanded production capacity, as companies aim to gain larger market share. Taiwanese LED manufacturer Edison Opto, which focuses on LED components, has an optimistic outlook for the Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC LED) and COB application market. The company has already launched production capacity expansion plans in 2014, with aims of enlarging PLCC production by 1.5 times. The move is a definite statement of Edison Opto’s confidence in the field, and acts as a supply guarantee to clients.

Intensified competition in the LED lighting component market has led Edison Opto to shift towards value adding services to differentiate itself from competitors, and cutthroat price competitions in the red sea market. In a recent interview with LEDinside, Edison Opto Chairman Jason Wu sheds light on the company’s overall development and product strategies for 2014, and talks about LED lighting market trends this year.
Dedicated to product quality and value adding new technologies
Facing continual price falls in the LED component market, Edison Opto has stuck to its good quality product brand strategy, and sought new value adding technologies to boost international brand recognition, said Wu. Edison Opto displayed many products at Light+Building 2014 show in Frankfurt, Germany that took place from March 31 to April 3, 2014. LEDinside noted many new trends at the show, including the company’s focus on high-end applications, and rising demands for high quality products in the luminaire market.

Edison Opto Launches high color rendering LED components to meet light quality demands
Edison Opto developed a new series of high color rendering LED products to meet client’s higher light quality demands. “Pink PLCC LED tubes” attracted the most attention out of this product series. The luminaire is suitable for food, plant and aquarium lighting. By adding suitable components to the tube light, under proper wavelength the luminaire can compensate sunlight and stimulate plant growth better than conventional grow lights.
In the aquarium sector, LED tube light has already received much attention. LED clip lights and panel lights are already widely used, and replacement ratio for CFL tube lights is very high. Edison Opto’s PLCC LED tube lights can provide the right wavelength for seaweed growth, and is good for aquarium background lighting.

Remote phosphor lamp was also a major attraction at the show. The LED lamp made from LumenMax PLCC LED is equipped with a 140 beam angle optic lens, and phosphor coated cover. The lamp received a lot of attention from foreign buyers since its color quality is within 3-step McAdam ellipse, enabling it to reach color consistency.

Edison Opto’s high voltage COB products become the first to pass LM80 standard
Edison Opto began COB developments fairly early. As customers’ rising demand for light shape, COB LED modules have become a major application in the down light market, and have been widely accepted by clients. The company’s high luminous efficiency EdiPower II HM series products released in 2013 has been highly valued by the market. Edison Opto’s COB product range from 5W to 40W, and are applied in different application markets.
The HM09 and HM 30 products have already received LM80 certification, and are one of the few high power COB products on the market that meet LM80 standards. Color Rendering Index (CRI) for cool color LED products are above 90, and over 95 for warm color LED products. The products are very competitive with luminous efficacy reaching 140 lm/W, satisfying high commercial lighting demands from international clients.

Company optimistic about flip chip development
Flip chip technology has become one of the hottest topics in the LED market. Not to be left behind, Edison Opto has launched related LED products. Due to flip chip LED’s very short circuit distance, Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturers generally lack the manufacturing precision. To realize Chip Scale Package (CSP), manufacturers will need to technologically cooperate with supply chain manufacturers, and put in extra effort to gain buyers’ recognition. To make applications more convenient for clients, Edison Opto has especially launched the EdiTech 3535. The LED is currently suitable for single light source lighting products with high luminous flux, such as LED flashlights, and other developing applications.

LED lighting and luminaire products target special niche markets
One way to increase luminaire overall gross profit is having good design capabilities and product development plans. Edison Opto demonstrated its strength in this area at Frankfurt lighting show. The company targeted special LED luminaire types including bay lights. The Taiwanese LED manufacturer began developing and promoting 100W COB modules to make it more acceptable to clients because clients were unsure of how to use the product. The modules do not clash with current LED client basis, and the industry has placed significance on high/low bay developments and used it.

Furthermore, Edison Opto has also used direct-type LED backlight technology to develop LED panel lights which have high cost/performance (C/P) value. Edison LED panel lights use the high efficacy component─PLCC 3528 as light source with 140° optical lens. This arrangement reduces the need for light guide boards, and cut costs by 50% compared to conventional panel light designs. The product is very price competitive, and also attracted certain international buyers.

Edison Opto is cooperating with many large international and domestic energy efficient lighting manufacturers on luminaire R&D projects, according to LEDinside observations. Using this kind of close partnership model, the company can shorten the R&D phase and process, while increasing company visibility. Compared to conventional LED Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), Edison Opto hopes to steady its LED component brand through value adding technologies.
