OSRAM Showcased an LED/OLED Rear Lamp Demonstrator at Light + Building 2016

At light + Building 2016, OSRAM was presenting an innovation in automotive lighting: an LED/OLED rear light demonstrator showcasing four lighting functions – brake light, turn indicator, reversing light and rear light. Designed and implemented in collaboration with the company Automotive Lighting, the rear light demonstrator is using two different types of round OLED tiles.

In order for it to work as a rear light, red OLEDs light up in a concentric double-ring structure, with each ring being individually addressable. Wide luminous mono rings of yellow OLEDs make up the turn indicator. The center of the OLED rings is transparent. Six white power LEDs shine through the transparent area of the yellow indicator OLEDs – for the reversing light. Similarly, red power LEDs shine through the transparent centers of the red OLEDs, making up the brake light. On top of that, the demonstrator will display LED light guide solutions which support both brake light and turn indicator functionality. Since all OLED segments and most LEDs can be controlled individually, dynamic effects such as wiping turn indicators and welcoming scenarios can be created.

Marketing Manager Steven Roßbach on the LED/OLED rear light demonstrator: "With OLED you can create illuminated surfaces in virtually any shape and place them right next to each other. The demonstrator shows that these advantages can be combined with the benefits of LEDs. This opens up a wide range of design options for rear lights."
